On the Road

A Sojourn in the Desert

In late November, Patrice and I once again headed southwest to Arizona to explore the desert and gather images for future paintings.  We spent a couple of days with our archaeology buddies exploring the painted desert country around Holbrook, scouring the countryside for rock art. We found some amazing stuff. Motifs we had not seen before sent us on reveries of conjecture about what the native population experienced here in pre-Columbian times. This is food for the soul. It enriches my experience of the landscape and in turn, the depth of my paintings.

All images below are photos.

From here, we dropped over the Mogollon rim into the warm desert country. I love this short drive from the frigid high-desert to the warm Sonoran landscape 4000 feet below. The thermometer shot from 17° to 72° in a few hours. It is a renewing experience.

We visited the gallery in Scottsdale, delivering a new batch of paintings, then dropped down to Tucson to spend a warm Thanksgiving with close friends.

Exploring the desert country around the Santa Catalina mountains, we hike through the upper Sonoran landscape across hillsides prickly with cactus, through dry washes choked with mesquite. The desert is golden green in the late-afternoon sunlight. I collect new images for paintings. I also collect a few cactus spines driven deeply and painfully into my hand. Being skewered by cactus is becoming a tradition on these trips, a sacrifice made to the desert deities in exchange for the chance at new paintings. I revisit some familiar places, hoping to see them anew. It takes many visits to a place, especially a strange and spectacular landscape like the Sonoran desert, before I begin to see it clearly. I like to get the landscape under my skin (literally in this case) before I try painting it. Did I achieve my goal on this trip? Only time in the studio will tell.
